Frequently Asked Questions

What DOes Therapy look like?

What DOes Therapy look like?

For our online therapy sessions, I use Allia Health. Our first appointment together (the intake appointment) we’ll do an overview of your mental, physical, emotional, and family history, your main concerns, and we’ll talk about your goals for therapy. I’ll explain informed consent for treatment and answer any questions you might have about our work together.

All following therapy sessions (follow-up sessions) will look more like “typical” therapy, except tailored specifically to the things you’re wanting to focus on—with a lot more pop culture references, laughter, and even some accidental (or not-so-accidental) swear words here and there.

We’ll talk about your progress in therapy every now and then and can always adjust our plans according to what’s feeling best for you.

If there is a specific style of therapy you’re looking for, let me know. If I don’t offer that type of therapy, I’ll work with you to find someone who does.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CANCEL A SESSION?

WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CANCEL A SESSION?

My cancellation policy is 48 hours, which means I’ll need 48 hours’ notice (or more) to cancel in order to avoid the late cancellation fee. For private pay folks the cancellation fee is equal to your session fee, unless otherwise agreed upon.

For folks using insurance, the cancellation fee is equal to the contracted rate I have with your insurance company, unless otherwise agreed upon. I will tell you what this rate is when we schedule our first session together.

Everyone gets one “freebie” late cancellation, and I am always happy to discuss exceptions for cancellation reasons that are entirely outside of your control.

WILL THE THINGS WE TALK ABOUT STAY PRIVATE?

WILL THE THINGS WE TALK ABOUT STAY PRIVATE?

What we talk about is our sessions will remain private and confidential per HIPAA law. I am only able to share your information if you give me written and signed permission to do so, such as in a Release of Information form.

Some people choose to have their information shared to their primary healthcare provider, their psychiatrist, or other important people in their lives who they want involved in their care. Other folks choose not to have anyone involved at all. It’s entirely up to you.
However, there are a few situations where I have to break confidentiality, where I may not be required to get your permission first

Some of those situations include:
  • If I have reason to believe (or you tell me) you may seriously injure or kill yourself, or if you tell me you have intentions, plans, or the means to injure or kill yourself
  • If I have reason to believe (or you tell me) you may seriously injure or kill someone else, or if you tell me you have intentions, plans, or the means to injure or kill someone else
  • If you inform me of a child or vulnerable/dependent adult who is being abused, or when I have reason to suspect that a child or vulnerable/dependent adult is being abused
  • When I am ordered by a judge to do so

Please note: if you want to send a superbill to your insurance for potential OON reimbursement, this means I need to put a diagnostic code (a diagnosis) on your bill. I am happy to explain more what this means for you during our sessions together.

WHAT IS A GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE?

WHAT IS A GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE?

In accordance with the federal No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
